Before yesterday, I’d never heard of them, but the consortium of European companies that call themselves the Desertec Foundation are set to significantly influence the utilisation of renewable energy on our planet.
So, what’s the plan? Desertec plans on building solar panels across the Sahara desert in a bid to provide clean, renewable energy to countries in Europe and Africa. If the proposed plans go ahead, as many as 17,000 square kilometres (around 6,500 square miles) of Saharan desert would be covered by solar power systems, providing continental Europe alone with around 15% of its total energy requirements. The project isn’t cheap, however, and will require an investment of around €400 billion by the year 2050.
As the Sahara is largely uninhabited, as well as being close to Europe, it seems like a logical choice for such a large-scale solar power project. But despite all this hype, the Foundation is not without its critics; with some claiming that such a project would be likely to become the target of terrorist attacks, as well as making much of Europe dangerously dependant on North African countries.
