Nicky WhelanWhile watching Melrose Place last night I was surprised to notice ex-gossipNeighbours hottie, Nicky Whelan appearing in the episode. Though she was barely in the show for long enough to be framed by Violet (played by Ashlee Simpson-Wentz) Whelan shows yet another example of how succesful Australian actors are breaking into the U.S. television market.

Another Melrose character: Lauren Yung, who turns to prostitution in order to pay her way through medical school, is played by Stephanie Jacobsen, who previously appeared as a nurse on Home and Away—another iconic Australian soap opera.

Vampire thriller, True Blood, features the acting talents of Ryan Kwanten, who played Vinnie in Home and Away and has now adopted a southern drawl in order to become Sookie’s slow-witted brother; while Tammin Sursok, yet another Home and Away escapee, managed to score the role of Colleen Carlton on American daytime soap, Young and the Restless.

Clearly scarred by the memories of watching her brother dress up like a girl and sing about red lemonade, Dichen Lachman who previously played Katya Kinski on Neighbours, has agreed to have the memories of her old life confined to a wedge and is now a regular cast member of Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse.

In no way is this a comprehensive list of all the Australian stars breaking into Hollywood, but it is interesting to see just how prevalent some of our Australian soap stars are becoming overseas. More Miss Whelan, please.
