volcanopanicA Melbourne geologist has warned that Australia may be considered “overdue” for a volcanic eruption and that emergency response plans should be put in place early in order to minimise the risks.

In an interview with ABC’s The World Today, Associate Professor Bernie Joyce explained that Australia is home to a number of relatively young volcanoes. Such young volcanoes have been shown to erupt roughly every 2,000 years; but it has been at least 5,000 years since Australia experienced its last real volcanic activity, when Mount Gambier erupted.

According to the Professor, the areas of Australia most at risk of experiencing volcanic activity are far western Victoria stretching into south-eastern South Australia, as well as some inland areas of Queensland.
